Pink Ribbon Review BCAM Giveaway: Day Three

by Karen Lynch on October 3rd, 2008

Welcome to day three of the Pink Ribbon Review Breast Cancer Awareness Month Giveaway! In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), I’m giving away a pink ribbon product every single day during the month of October.

Today’s giveaway: A Hershey’s Tour de Pink jersey and backpack!

2007 Ride 2.jpg

Hershey’s Tour de Pink is a four-day, 220-mile bike ride benefiting the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) — a non-profit network of breast cancer survivors and supporters dedicated to the concerns and issues unique to young women and breast cancer.

The Hershey’s Tour de Pink kicks off today, October 3, 2008. Here’s the route the riders are taking each day of this event:

  • Friday, October 3rd: Hershey, PA to King of Prussia, PA - approximately 85 miles
  • Saturday, October 4th: King of Prussia, PA to Trenton, NJ - approximately 83 miles
  • Sunday, October 5th: Trenton, NJ to Clinton, NJ - approximately 48 miles
  • Monday, October 6th: Ceremonial ride from Clinton, NJ to finish line in NYC

I talked to YSC founding member Lisa Frank earlier this week. She explained to me that what started as a grassroots effort has turned into a major fundraising event.

“In 2005, we had 9 riders and we raised about $20,000 - $50,000,” says Frank. “This year? Each day we’ll have about 155 riders on the road and we’ve also allowed for virtual riders … we’re at $435,000 and we’re still going.”

You can follow the riders on this year’s ride by reading their blogs and visiting their photo gallery. You can, of course, if you are moved to do so, donate to the Tour de Pink event by clicking here.

Now, let’s talk about the event’s primary sponsor; this event has been made possible by Hershey and the company deserves some serious applause.

“To have Hershey behind us is just amazing,” says Frank. “They throw a big dinner the night before the race, a celebratory opening in Chocolate World; they provide the t-shirts, hats, backpacks, tote bags … they are an amazing sponsor.”

In addition, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Hershey’s Kisses, Hershey’s Nuggets, Hershey’s Syrup, York Peppermint Patties and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Miniatures will feature pink packaging (there’s a pink ribbon on each bag and each candy is individually wrapped in pink foil). As part of the promotion, Hershey is donating $300,000 to the Young Survival Coalition (YSC). That’s over and above what they’ve done to sponsor to the Tour de Pink.

Onto the chocolate … I’m telling you, those Hershey’s Nuggets in Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate are divine. I wanted to review these chocolates for you, and received a bunch in house to do just that … but seriously … do you need me to? Who doesn’t know how delicious each and every bite of a Hershey’s chocolate is? Which Hershey product is your favorite?

So … comment on this post and you’ll be entered in a competition to win your very own Tour de Pink jersey and backpack. Go ahead … and share which Hershey’s product is your favorite when you do and you’ll make me smile, big time!

Make sure you read the Pink Ribbon Review BCAM giveaway rules.

And remember … you have until midnight EST to comment. Good luck!

I think that Hershey’s Tour de Pink is great!!!
Anything that supports Breast Cancer and advocates awareness is awesome! I did my part and walked 60KMS in September in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer and it was truly the most amazing experience!

I am already a cyclist. So this would be a great addition to my cycling clothing. I could wear it to a race and really encourage everyone to think about the importance of self breast exams.

It is so gratifying to see companies such as Hershey’s play such a prominent role in supporting ALL women and breast cancer. Hershey’s dedication to the concerns and issues unique to this disease is empowering for us all! I would proudly wear the Tour de Pink Jersey to help spread the word and awareness to all that see me. I ride on a regular basis as well as run 4 miles a day so it will get a lot of exposure! Thank you for offering us such great insight into the activites going on daily during Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Rock on!

It always seems odd to me when companies with candy products host health events.

That being said, this is really wonderful that they’re doing that. And we all loves chocolate:)
