Memorial Day Weekend

Here in the United States, Memorial Day is set aside to commemorate the lives of the men and women who died in military service to our country.

My husband and sons will be celebrate Memorial Day by marching in our town’s parade; my daughter and I will celebrate by watching the parade from the sidelines, waving American flags and applauding the veterans (and cub scouts) as they pass.

But all the while, I’ll be thinking: doesn’t the word ‘memorial’ bring to mind something completely different? Fatalities from a non-military battle we’re all too familiar with?

An estimated 40,480 women and 450 men will die from breast cancer in the U.S. during 2008 (Source: Komen). Is there a day to commemorate their deaths?

So here’s my idea: this weekend, please join me in memorializing all those men and women who have died in military service to our country and those who lost their lives in a battle against breast cancer. If you’d like, leave a comment “in memory of” someone — in memory of a soldier, or a loved one who passed away after battling breast cancer.

And while you’re out there enjoying picnics and parades … take two moments of silence. First, to honor their lives; second, to celebrate your own.

How truly blessed we are to be among the living this year.

I’m going first, commenting on my own post, but posting in memory of the 35 sons and daughters of Connecticut that have lost their lives in the Middle East since we’ve begun to fight back in this war on terrorism … God bless their souls.
