Pink Ribbon Search - Search to Fund Free Mammograms
The next time you go to “google” something, head over to Pink Ribbon Search.com and you’ll fund free mammograms.
Pink Ribbon Search is a search engine that ‘combines the power of Google and Yahoo’ — 100% of the revenue generated from advertisers on the site is given to non-profit partners to fund clinics and mobile mammography vans that provide free mammograms to women in need.
When I’m browsing the web in Firefox, my homepage is set to iGoogle; I’ve added the Pink Ribbon Search gadget to my homepage.
The site is in partnership with The Breast Cancer Site — that’s the site where you can click to fund free mammograms. Here’s a little something about the owners of these sites from their FAQ page:
“Long-time environmental activists Tim Kunin and Greg Hesterberg met at the University of Michigan while working on the Michigan Bottle Bill ballot campaign in 1976. As enthusiastic supporters of The Hunger Site, they realized the power of providing busy Internet users with a fast, free and easy way to make a difference and launched EcologyFund.com to give people the means to support wilderness preservation efforts worldwide. They are particularly excited about The Breast Cancer Site, as both are sons of breast cancer survivors.”
Since they started in 2000, this site has funded free mammograms for more than 16,000 women. In 2007, they funded 7,151. WOW.
Here’s how their system of philanthropy works … the clicks the site receives each day are counted and the site’s sponsors (advertisers) donate accordingly a certain dollar amount to the nonprofit National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). The NBCF uses the funds to provide free mammography screenings to low-income, homeless and inner-city women.
So … back to the search engine … that’s all income for the NBCF. Search to fund free mammograms. It’s a small thing to do that could make a difference to many!
