Coffee Consumption Can Reduce Breast Cancer Risk
Read this today at ScienceDaily:
Depending on which variant of a certain gene a woman has, a coffee consumption rate of at least two-three cups a day can either reduce the total risk of developing breast cancer or delay the onset of cancer, according to new research.
2-3 cups a day … yeah, that’s about what I do. Coffee is mandatory for the adults in this house in the morning. My kids know, don’t even start with me until I’ve had at least my first cup. This morning my eight year old tried to pour my first cup for me for heaven’s sake (”What do you put in it, Mommy? I’ll get it for you.” Bless his heart.)
The ScienceDaily piece goes on to say:
The effect of coffee is related to estrogens, female sex hormones. Certain metabolic products of these hormones are known to be carcinogenic, and various components of coffee can alter the metabolism so that a woman acquires a better configuration of various estrogens.
I’ve heard that coffee isn’t good for women going through menopause — I’m sure this very scientific explanation makes sense to the people that have studied up on that. This science stuff here isn’t quite over my head but I really don’t want to work to hard to understand what they’re telling me.
Lastly, there was this:
What’s more, coffee contains caffeine, which also hampers the growth of cancer cells.
Coffee, water, wine — with an occasional diet soda thrown in for good measure. Where’s the study on that I wonder … diet soda … I don’t even want to know. (You all read about how alcohol increases breast cancer risk, right?)
Anyway, in the same way we can’t figure out what caused our cancer, we can’t figure out what might be working to prevent it in the first place. But we can take all this information in and realize that all we can do is try to eat a healthy and balanced diet — ingest things that are mostly good for us and take it easy on the things that are not — and recognize that some of the things we’re told to stay away from might actually be doing us some good!
