Pink Ribbon Review | Raising Breast Cancer Awareness

Welcome to The Pink Ribbon Review

by Karen Lynch on April 1st, 2008

KML.jpg Hi! I’m Karen Lynch. I’m a freelance writer and journalist and a two-time breast cancer survivor. I’m also a huge fan of the pink ribbon. Why? Because to me, it symbolizes my personal victories in my fight against breast cancer. It signifies the support survivors I and other survivors received from individuals and organizations all over the world. It stands for hope … the hope I have that more women are diagnosed early, less women are killed by breast cancer and a cure is finally found for this blasted disease.

I feel it is important to educate people about the need for early detection. Both time I was diagnosed I was at an early stage (Stage 0 the first time, Stage 1 the second time). I feel incredibly blessed as a result and sincerely wish more women will have their cancers detected early — and with every surge of awareness about self breast exams (SBE), mammograms and personal healthcare vigilance, I believe this will happen.

After my initial treatment had ended, I wasn’t terribly prepared for the continued doctors appointments, the “kid-gloves” many people wore around me or my own fear of a breast cancer recurrence. That’s why it is vital to me that I reach out to others who live in the world of survivorship, the “after-cancer-life” if you will. I feel it is important for survivors to recognize that they are not alone.

I never felt more alone then when I was given a breast cancer diagnoses and at times my treatment was so isolating. Having a shared experience makes me, as a survivor, feel less lonely; I believe others survivors would agree. Today and every day I feel empowered when I stay on top of breast cancer research and developments. That’s why it is crucial to me that I raise people’s awareness of current events and news-worthy information pertaining to breast cancer.

If you are newly diagnosed and scared out of your mind and seeking information … this is the place for you. I’ll keep you informed, as best I can, because I believe information is power and I want you to feel that power. You can’t control the cancer within you, but you can control the information you take in to fight it.

If you are in treatment and looking for support and camaraderie and fellowship as you try to get through your treatment (and as you tick the time away until you’re cured) … this is also the place for you.If you are living the “after-cancer-life” and want to meet your figurative neighbors and stay connected to those who understand what you’ve been through and what your life is like now … this is certainly the place for you.

If you are a caregiver, or someone who knows someone living with breast cancer, or someone simply desiring knowledge about breast cancer … this is indeed the place for you. For those of you who want to know what I literally get out of blogging about breast cancer, you can start read my disclaimer. For the rest of you … I’m glad to be here. I’m glad you’re reading. Now let’s review!
